England’s former batsman Jonathan Trott to coach Afghanistan
The board has appointed Jonathan Trott, a former batter for England, as the team’s new head coach. During Afghanistan’s August tour of Ireland, he will assume command.
In addition to serving as Scotland’s batting consultant for the 2021 T20 World Cup, Trott, 41, has previously worked with the England Men’s team, England Lions, and the U19 teams. He left the sport back in 2018.
“I’m honoured and excited to have the opportunity to take one of international cricket’s most exciting teams through what is a huge year for their development as a team,” Trott was quoted as saying by the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
“I can’t wait to get to work with a group of players who are clearly capable of generating results in a style that will make the people of Afghanistan proud.”
Graham Gooch, a fellow countryman of Trott, was initially slated to hold the position of head coach. However, the former England cricketer was unable to keep his appointment after contracting a serious illness in May of this year.
