Samsung VC and CEO Jong-Hee Hang recently apologized to users over the app throttling controversy during the company’s shareholders’ meeting. The company was allegedly gaming the performance of apps on some of its smartphones including the recently-launched Galaxy S22 series. In 2021, OnePlus too was accused of manipulating benchmarking scores by app throttling on OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones.
Now it appears that Xiaomi too may be throttling the performance of some apps. According to John Poole, co-founder of benchmarking platform Geekbench, Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone
has been found to manipulate performance. In a series of tweets, Poole claimed that he found the Xiaomi Mi model to be throttling the performance of apps.
In the tweets, Poole claims that he installed both the original Geekbench app and a fake one
disguised as Fortnite on the smartphone. “Single-core scores are 30% lower, and multi-core scores are 15 percent lower, in the Fortnite build.” Poole wrote.
Xiaomi so far has not issued an official statement on Poole’s claims. It is also not yet known whether this is the only smartphone from the company throttling apps. In case the allegations are right, Xiaomi models that are found to be throttling app performance may be delisted from Geekbench.
The website recently delisted the Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphones after a similar incident.
App performance throttling means deliberately reducing the performance of a particular app. The aim of the throttling performance of apps on a smartphone is to boost the gaming performance and battery life.
It also reduces the risk of the smartphone getting overheated. In the reported cases, smart phone brands Samsung and OnePlus were caught deliberately restricting the performance of the popular apps on Google Play Store such as Google, Chrome, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, Zoom, and several others.
