TRAI asks telcos to submit details of segmented offers

In a significant move, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) ordered the operators to furnish details of segmented offers i.e. plans offered by telecom operators to a targeted slice of their subscribers. Telecom operators have to comply with this order from this month.

The telecom authority said this is in accordance with the apex court’s order on November 6, to provide details of segmented offers to TRAI.

It should be mentioned here that segmented offers are promotions and discounts given to a small subset of customers showing an inclination towards shifting to other telecom operators. To retain consumers, the telcos generally offer preferential customer status, better data speeds, access to OTT streaming platforms among others.

Notably, TRAI is seeking details on rates, the quantum of services, the validity of subscription, the number of segmented offers to the subscribers, and so on.

All such segmented tariffs are to be publicly displayed on the telecom service providers’ websites for transparent complete disclosure to consumers without any discrimination.
