JioMeet: Reliance Jio officially launches its video conferencing app to take on Zoom, Google Meet

Jumping on the video conferencing bandwagon, India’s telecom major Reliance Jio has officially launched its free video conferencing service called ‘JioMeet’. The video conferencing app will take on rivals like Zoom, Google Meet, and others, all of which are seeing a surge in usage with remote working becoming the ‘new normal’ owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

JioMeet offers an unlimited number of free calls in HD to users and supports as many as 100 participants at once.  In addition, Jio says that free calls can be uninterrupted for up to 24 hours long. Other highlights include easy sign up with either email ID or mobile number, meeting in HD audio and video quality.

Its interface is pretty simple and uncluttered, facilitating the user to use and host important calls.  Sources said the homegrown video conferencing platform provides multi-device login support, on up to five devices, and the user can seamlessly switch between devices while on a call. It also includes the feature called Safe Driving Mode, and standard features such as screen sharing.

“Jio Meet is a platform that has much uniqueness – it actually has an ability to work on any device, any operating system, and it has an ability to do a complete collaboration,” Pankaj Pawar, senior VP, Reliance Jio Infocomm, said. Notably, this development comes at a time when the call for “Self-Reliant India” is gaining resonance with the masses in the nation.
