5G spectrum to open up enormous opportunities across all industry verticals: Says DoT’s AK Tiwari

The 5G ecosystem in India has become broader and deeper as technology companies, especially startups and SMEs (small and medium enterprise) are working hard in developing indigenous 5G technologies, according to a senior official.

India will witness a good number of players in 5G technologies, paving the way for the 6G revolution in the coming years. Over 206 operators have launched 5G services in 81 countries and India is pacing fast to roll out 5G technology which will open up a lot of opportunities not just in voice and data, but across all industry verticals, AK Tiwari, Member, Digital Commissions said while speaking at the fifth edition of ETTelecom 5G Congress 2022 recently.

Telecom technologies are transforming almost once in every 10 years. Technology trials are critical for testing in the field. Considering the fact that telecom rollout involves multibillion dollar investment, the government announced 5G technology trials last year to enable the service providers to experience a 5G environment for rollout demonstrating issues propagation characteristics etc, he said.

“We have received good response from the last 5G hackathon with over 1000 proposals with several key ideas in agriculture, smart infrastructure, logistics, health, education, manufacturing, resource management and in many other fields”, he said, adding, “market will respond positively in taking forward the adoption of these use cases for the benefit of society, business and all across”.

The DoT funded 5G test bed is almost ready to offer 5G testing services for the technology, industry and use case companies. Test bed will be accessible to all at an affordable cost, mainly for startups and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) to promote ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’ in building India’s indigenous technologies and services.

Lastly, there is remarkable progress at the 5G use case lab at IIT Hyderabad, which is closely working with Indian technology companies for 5G use cases in the fintech sector. “We will create more such centers in different verticals, creating capacities and necessary competencies to exploit the extreme 5G capabilities to shape a new generation of use cases. These use cases which will shape our life across all walk off spheres, in business, in enterprises and in strategic uses,” Tiwari said.
