PM Modi claims Gold medal winner Mirabai Chanu ‘exceptional’

India’s first gold medal in the current edition of the Commonwealth Games was won by Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. She succeeded in lifting 84 kg (snatch) on her first try and then 88 kg on her second. She failed at her third 90kg try. She lifted 109 kg to begin the clean and jerk round and then 113 kg to finish. Her third attempt at 115 kg, however, was unsuccessful.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Mirabai Chanu an exceptional performer and congratulated her on the win of Gold medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, Birmingham 2022.

“The exceptional Mirabai Chanu (tagging her) makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes,” tweeted PM Modi
