The National Broadband Mission (NBM) would facilitate universal and equitable access to broadband services across India, as well as ensure internet services to all villages by 2022, and the national policy would further strengthen the country’s telecom sector, said the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Sanjay Dhotre.

“NBM will ensure broadband services to all villages by 2022. We have created a massive digital infrastructure to make India ready for the next level in the digital economy,” the 61-year-old minister said at the ETTelecom Digital Telco Summit 2020.

Launched in 2019, the ambitious initiative aims to bridge the digital divide, fast track growth of digital communications infrastructure and provide affordable access of broadband for all Indians.

The national mission includes laying of approximately 30-lakh kilometre route optical fibre and improve the quality of mobile as well as internet services.

The National Digital Communication Policy (NDCP) 2018 was approved to further strengthen India, and its telecommunication muscle, the minister said.

With the help of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), Dhotre said that the government aims to connect the remaining villages that do not have mobile connectivity and located in the far-flung areas of the country.

“We are committed to supporting the efforts for transformational telecom technologies, we are committed to necessary efforts in the telecom sector,” he said.

Talking about the fourth industrial revolution, Dhotre said the emergent technologies such as 5G, M2M, and AI need to be supported by incentivising them.

According to him, Digital India is not merely for the sake of going digital, but it was launched to achieve the governance system that is accessible, affordable, and equitable.

Dhotre said that the government would certainly do whatever is needed so that the telecom sector continues to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country and for the benefit of consumers.
