Fiberisation key component in delivering the full potential of 5G networks in the country, say Airtel and Vodafone Idea

Backhaul and fiberisation of sites will be critical to deliver the potential of the fifth-generation or 5G networks in India, says top Indian telecom sector Executives to the press at the filling of this report. Sites can be connected using the E-band which can complement the fiber build-up and also plug the crucial investment and time gaps that are present in the laying down of fibre.

“A proper framework should be created for the auction of mid-band and the millimeter-bands so that there is adequate spectrum available to all the operators, and also to make sure that for E & V band there is a formal process of putting it to the auction right now and allocate it to the operators so that both the backhaul and the access is taken care of,” stated P Balaji, Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer, Vodafone Idea.

Telecom operators have been urging the regulator for auctioning the millimeter-wave and mid-band airwaves so as to ensure that adequate spectrum is available to all telecoms and asking to put E & V-bands under the hammer. “Today, only around 30-35% of our sites are fiberised compared to Korea, which is around 70- 75% and China has 100% of the sites fiberised.

We are in a very, very difficult situation. As we head towards 5G to be able to give fiber-like performance everywhere, what is going to happen is that you will require wireless backhaul,” Rahul Vatts, Chief Regulatory Affairs Officer, Bharti Airtel said in a panel discussion on ‘Policy and Spectrum Roadmap for Making 5G Accessible Affordable’ at the fifth edition of ETTelecom 5G Congress – 2022.

“In the case of 5G, things that we need to take care of are low latency capacity, speed. What is needed is
densification of the whole network which will be important for 5G,” TR Dua, Director General of Digital
Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) added. “If you look at 5G, fiberisation will be at the heart of it. We have just 30-35% sites fiberised”, he further added.
