At the end of March 2020, the count of internet subscribers in India rose to more than 743 million, registering a growth rate of 3.4 per cent on a sequential-quarter basis,
the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s data revealed.
Reliance Jio led the chart capturing about 52.3% of the overall market share, followed by Bharti Airtel (23.6 per cent share) and Vodafone Idea (18.7 per cent) in the quarter ended March 2020.
In this, the number of wireless internet subscribers stood at 720.7 million, while wired internet subscribers were 22.4 million.
Wireless internet subscribers increased to 720.7 million for the period in reference, a quarter-on-quarter growth rate of 3.51 per cent.
“Out of total internet subscribers, 96.90 per cent of subscribers are using mobile devices for access to internet service. Wired internet subscribers are only 3.02 per cent in total internet subscribers at the end of March 20,” TRAI said.
Of the total wired internet subscribers, state-owned BSNL held 50.3 per cent market share, followed by Bharti Airtel.
In the wireless internet segment, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio captured over 53% market share, followed by Bharti Airtel (24%).
The top five service areas in terms of internet subscriptions were:
• Maharashtra (63.01 million)
• Andhra Pradesh including Telangana (58.65 million)
• Uttar Pradesh (East) (54.6 million)
• Tamil Nadu including Chennai (51.64 million)
• MP including Chhattisgarh (48.72 million)
