CEO Tim Cook says Apple set a quarterly record in India

Apple Inc Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the company has achieved a new September quarter sales record in India owing to good response of its online store in the country.

The much-awaited iPhone maker’s online store went live in India last month with a bunch of new services to meet consumer demand.

“Geographically, we set September quarter records in the Americas, Europe and Rest of Asia Pacific,” Cook said in its July-September earnings call, adding the company also set a September quarter record in India.

While the 59-year-old executive did not elaborate further, industry experts said strong sales of iPhones further accelerated sales growth in the country as consumers preferred to purchase Apple devices amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ongoing crisis triggered by the Coronavirus outbreak has boosted sales of electronics gadgets, including smartphones in India.

As per sales tracker GfK India, e-commerce contribution for smartphones is up from 29% to 32% in June-August this year over last, while for premium smartphones priced over Rs 30,000, the contribution has risen to 43%.

From today, the company’s new iPhones will go on sale in India and the US-based firm has already received a huge number of pre-orders on the two models, according to experts.

The iPhone 12 handset starts at Rs. 79,900, while the iPhone 12 Pro carries the price tag of Rs. 1,19,900.

According to the smartphone shipment tracker Counterpoint Research, the Cupertino-based tech giant is currently the leader in the premium smartphone segment or those priced above Rs 30,000 by surpassing China’s OnePlus.
